From Chania Airport to Platanias: Platanias is 11km from Chania, and you get there by taking the National Road from Chania to
Kissamos. It’s a major tourist destination and there are detailed signs, so don’t worry about missing the exit from the National
Road to the Platanias resort.

On leaving the National Road you find yourself at a large crossroad. Directly opposite is a sign pointing to Platanias and Agia
Marina, and another pointing to Maleme and Kolymbari. Take the correct route and about 1km further on you will see the sign
welcoming you to Platanias. Even if you miss the sign, the area is so built-up you will definitely know you’ve arrived.
If you turn off the National Road towards the village of Ano Stalos, you will find yourself on the coast road to Agia Marina. Keep

The weather in Crete is characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The climate of Crete is a temperate
Mediterranean climate.
There are significant differences between the coastal zone and the mountainous areas, as well as between the west and the east
part of Crete, when it comes to the weather conditions. The mountains of Crete form an East-West barrier to prevailing northerly
winds and they trap the clouds sweeping down the Aegean. The result is that it may be grey and wet in the north, but sunny on
the south coast where often the clouds do not extend over the sea.

• Coastal zone: Dry summer, mild winter. The rainy season starts in late October and lasts till March or even April. Snowfalls are
extremely rare in the coastal zone of Crete, especially so in the eastern part of the island.
• The east part of Crete (Sitia area) is drier and warmer than the west part (Chania district). This is obvious in the vegetation.
Chania is a lot greener than the desert-like Sitia area.
• The same difference applies between the north coast and the south coast of Crete, with the south coast being drier and

Crete is an island with an exquisite 1.000km-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a
multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. After all, it's among the finest in the world and
has established Crete as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. And, of course, the island's historic importance in
today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is
evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year.
However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than
8.000km2, there are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures.
If you haven’t visited Crete yet, this summer may be the time to come and discover this fascinating Greek island. If it captures
your heart, don’t worry. Come back next year and Crete will welcome you once more with its smiling Cretan sun, the sounds of
the Cretan lyre, the scents of orange blossom and jasmine, a slice of cool red watermelon and a glass of iced raki.

Platanias, the main tourist resort of Chania Prefecture.
